What is BMI?
Body mass index, or BMI, is a screening measure that compares weight with height. It is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by height in metres squared. BMI can be a useful starting point, but it is not a complete assessment of health.
BMI limitations for lifters
BMI does not distinguish muscle from body fat. As a result, muscular people and strength athletes may have a higher BMI classification despite having a healthy body composition. Waist measurements, body-fat trends, performance, medical history, and professional advice can provide useful additional context.
How can you improve your BMI?
Focus on sustainable habits such as regular resistance training, enjoyable cardiovascular activity, balanced meals, adequate sleep, and gradual changes that fit your routine. If you are worried that your weight or health may be putting you at risk, speak to a qualified medical professional for personalised advice.
